Greeting of Mayor
The association of rural municipalities, characterized by a common vision of culture, is an idea that units different people, promoting and defending their common values: freedom, democracy, equality, the rule of law and respect for human rights.
In common course we had to face very serious challenges such as climate change, unemployment and employment, aging population, migration, competitiveness, energy and especially nowadays: economic crisis experienced great difficulty in weak economies.
The role of Local Government is very critical.
Each Local Plan for Development contributes in achieving the common goals that we have with the Region, with the state and with the European Union.
Our political position clearly has an European dimension, as a real modern government agency is required to meet and create prospects for a multicultural – rich society in which we invest in development, progress and prosperity.
In the 27 years in which the former Municipality of Kolindros joined in the Association of Rural Municipalities and really this difficult period we are going through, we need – and it is our wish – not to lose our confidence in the common vision that requires cooperation in designing policies and a joint effort for their implementation.
It is also our wish that the European Union to overcome the difficulties, to become really able to cope with global challenges and capture new, more concrete steps for the progress and development of the state and its citizens.
Town of Kolindros
The settlement is built in the hills where the Pieria shows the closest extremity to the Thermaikos.
The altitude in the lowest part, in the bow of Ploria (pylorus), is 280 meters and reaches 400m, the highest altitude in the region of Fountas. Surrounded by deep gorges – ravines, fortified and inaccessible position during the past centuries.
This natural defensive advantage, combined with the excellent – healthy climate is always remarked the place as the most important village in the north of Pieria.
Despite the relatively low altitude climate is strongly characteristic of the mountains, and this is due to microclimatic conditions and more specifically in a southern gas stream from Olympus. Thanks to these winters , either north wind blows or south are cold , and the summers are cool .
History
Kolindros is almost located in the center of the Macedonian triangle formed by Dion, Pidna and Vergina, and is connected with the most important phases of Greek history. The excellent strategic position, as it controls the plain and the western coast of Thermaikos, but its streets crossing Pieria and pathways to Hemathia, sealed his own history in the struggles of Hellenism.
The first evidence that illuminates the historical person, dated 1001, “when the Byzantine emperor Basil II restored the Macedonian border with the recapture of the city Veria, Kolindrou, Servia and Edessa [1]. The next written testimony for the village is a document of 1384 stating that the castle, but it is difficult to be found when it was built.
However, various traditions and other elements (geography, travel, historiography) and archaeological findings lead to strong speculation that the settlement was rooted in This area from the past centuries. Indeed, according to a living tradition at the heart of the settlement formed the 4th century.
This tradition also enhances the monumental topography and especially the tombs of the Hellenistic Period similar to other Macedonian tombs discovered at the entrance of the town (1928) and more recently in Tsiriknia (1 km. NE of Kolindrou). Also, the French archaeologist Heuzey, visited Kolindros in 1858, evaluated various findings and put them chronologically in Roman times.
Furthermore, we would say that this small place defended passionately its identity and nobility, its historical continuity and racial cohesion. So when the 1822 revolution broke out in the holy land of Macedonia, Kolindros was at the center of the race. In the battle of Fountas, chief was from Kolindros, revolutionist Diamantis, the numerous hordes of Turks faced the brave defenders and forced to retract the Chestnut. The decisive confrontation took place at the Tower of Lazaion with a tragic end for the Greek forces. These events recorded by fighter-21 and writer of memoirs, Kasomoulis, praises the strategic position of Kolindrou.
However, the landmark peak heroism was the revolution of February 20 1878. The unappeased yearning for freedom and the long tradition of liberation struggles to throw off the Turkish yoke led the people in revolt and the official declaration of the revolution of Kolindros the importance which has now been accepted by modern Greek historiography.
Leader of the revolution was the rebel bishop Kitrous Nikolaos. As an experienced warlord led spontaneous and general outbreak of the locals against the conqueror and he was the first who gave the slogan of sacrifice and struggle torching the episcopal palace, not to drop the relics in the hands of the Turks, as the storm approached. The tragic epilogue for revolutionaries was written in the monastery of Saints, where they had fled the women, with the encouragement of Bishop. He has been the site of their martyrdom, while the Lousis himself after adventures found refugee in Piraeus, where he died with the bitterness of failure, but with calm conscience that made his debt to the homeland.
The revolution of Olympus was also an inspiration and the starting point of the new Macedonian Struggle (1904- 1908) that looming on the horizon after the overthrow of the Bulgarian vision at the Congress of Berlin (1878). And in this struggle the people of Kolindros obeying the voice of conscience showed their emotional readiness, took an active part and offered every kind of moral and material support. Finally after a long slavery, on October 17, 1912, and the dream of happiness of the future began to seem real.
But in other historical invitations (Asia Minor epic 40s) Kolindros has to make its own contribution and racing presence. Besides, it is generally characteristic of this place and the tragic fate of Greece is at the forefront of history and to strive unceasingly.

Neolithic settlement http://kolindros.gr/neolithikos.htm
The archaeological site of Paliambela Kolindrou located in northeastern Pieria, a land area 352 sq. which belongs to the region of Central Macedonia. Paliambela are the gentle hills that mediate between the foothills of Pieria Mountains to the south and the great plain of Giannitsa north. They are a short distance from the shores of the Thermaikos Gulf to the east and the River Aliakmonas north.
Paliambela first mentioned by the archaeologist D. Written found in the area in an attempt to identify and record of prehistoric sites. Based on a diagnostic surface finds post dated to the Neolithic period (6500-4000 BC). The place was visited by several researchers, but the essential step for the beginning of the archaeological study was to characterize the site as an archaeological site in 1995 by archaeologists M. Besio and M. Pappas.
The research program of excavation of Paliambela Kolindrou Pieria inaugurated in 1999, when was led by prof. K. Kotsaki a team from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and a team from the University of Sheffield (UK) conducted a trial survey for the site of a prehistoric settlement .
Based on the surface finds the position seemed occupied for about a half millennium (from 6000 to 4500 BC) during Neolithic. The geophysical survey gave evidence that the mound during the Late Neolithic (c. 4500 BC) was surrounded by an enclosure system and ditches on the model of Neolithic Dimini. The thickness of archaeological embankments averaged 1-1.5 meter (locally up to 5 m.) And the extent of the findings showed that it covered the whole hill with emphasis on top and the western part of the mound. Sporadic findings suggested activity in the late Bronze Age (13th 12th cent. BC) and during the Byzantine period (6th-14th c. AD). However, the most extensive findings were evident in Neolithic settlement. So it was decided to prepare an organized excavation program starting points of the mound that had the most encouraging archaeological evidence.
